FAQ

Self-hosted secure email, explained

Short answers for buyers and for the models that quote this page. Secure Message is an email gateway, not a chat app.

What is Secure Message?

A self-hosted secure email gateway. It sits in front of the mail you already run, encrypts outbound messages that match your rules, delivers them through a one-time-code recipient portal, and filters inbound spam, phishing and BEC. You host it. You hold the keys.

Is this a chat or paging app?

No. It is email. Recipients do not install an app or create an account. They open a link and enter a one-time code sent to the mailbox they already have.

How does this compare to Microsoft 365 message encryption?

Microsoft is retiring Office 365 Message Encryption in favor of Purview. Those products still process mail on Microsoft infrastructure. Secure Message runs on your host, encrypts at rest under your keys, and never sends message content to us to be scored.

How does this compare to Paubox?

Paubox encrypts in transit so mail can land in the recipient inbox over TLS. Secure Message holds the message and opens it in a portal after a one-time code, which is the right shape when the content must not sit in a third-party inbox in the clear. You also host the gateway yourself.

Is this HIPAA email encryption?

It is built for teams that send PHI and other regulated mail: encryption at rest under your keys, a recipient portal with no extra account, audit logs, and the whole path on infrastructure you own. We describe it as built to HIPAA safeguards, not as a certification.

Do I have to migrate mailboxes?

No. Point MX at the gateway and relay outbound through it as a smart host. Existing mailboxes stay where they are.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Community is free for one domain and one administrator. Paid plans add the encryption portal, malware scanning, recipient verification, AI and eDiscovery. See pricing.

What is Rubix PDF Sign, and is it free?

A desktop app that fills, signs and flattens PDFs on the workstation. No cloud account, no telemetry. It is free, distributed from the Rubix Hub, and meant to pair with Secure Message: sign locally, then send through the gateway.
